Abstract (EN)

In this study, emphasizing the significance of exploring the effects of figure and decoration application in modern ceramic art through the lens of surrealism movement, the concrete outcomes of these effects have been examined. Surrealism, a Turkish term meaning "gerçeküstücülük," is derived from the French word "surreef." It was systematized by Andre Breton, who worked in psychiatric departments during World War I and was interested in Sigmund Freud's ideas. The works of pioneers of this movement such as Salvador Dali, Andre Masson have been studied, and some ceramic artists who create ceramic pieces have also been included within this movement. Surrealism has been perceived as a bridge between consciousness and the unconsciousness, considering it as the reflection of reality in human minds. The effects of this movement in modern ceramic art can be observed in the works of renowned painters and contemporary ceramic artists. In the history of ceramic art, the influence of surrealism has led to the expansion of figurative and decorative elements beyond the boundaries of imagination, incorporating elements like zigzags, handprints, geometric shapes, stylized birds. Apart from human and animal figures and functional items like pottery, ceramic art has transitioned into a three-dimensional and modern process. Surrealism, synonymous with imagination and creativity, has also captivated the attention of ceramic artists, becoming a movement that resonates in the field of ceramics. Within the study, the aesthetic effects of surrealism on figures and decorations in modern ceramic art have been deemed significant, and examples of works by both Turkish and foreign artists have been presented.
