The investigation of mechanical properties of AA1050 and AA5754-H111 aluminum plates joined by friction stir welding

In this study, AA1050 and AA5754 aluminum alloy plates were welded as similar and dissimilar alloy joints using Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process in order to investigate mechanical and microstructural properties. Welding proceeding speed, rotational speed of the mixer tip and angle of the mixer tip are chosen as the fixed parameters. A welding tool made of tool steel was employed in the welding of Al-alloy plates. A vertical-spindle type milling machine is use for this work.Aluminum alloy plates were welded one and two way. No deformation or distortion has been observed in the plates after the welding procedure. Metallurgical and mechanical properties of the welded zones are investigated by means of performing metallographic and mechanical tests on the welded zones of the samples.As a result of this study, single-sided welding of AA1050 has provided sufficient strength. But, double-sided welding AA5754 has provided higher strength than single-side welding. Strenght of welding AA1050-AA5754 has set mechanic feature of AA1050. The mixture of these materials is a local fusion. The welding system used in this study can be developed further and is very convenient for automation. The joint quality obtained in this study will further be improved by optimizing welding parameters.
