ABSTRACTMaster ThesisTHE INVESTIGATION OF MICROSTRUCTURES AND MECHANICALPROPERTIES OF FRICTION STIR WELDED ALUMINIUM ALLOYSSedat BÜYÜKARSLANUniversity of FıratGraduate School of ScienceDepartment of Metallurgy Education2006, Pages:79Friction stir welding is a solid state welding process which has been invented in the last10 years and its improvement is still going on together with developing technology and it hasfound large application areas in welding world of aluminium and aluminium alloys.In this study, the ETIAL-3 aluminium alloy couple were joined by friction stir weldingtechnique with using different process parameters. The aim of this study is to determine theeffect of rotation speed, travel speed and pin geometry which are the main parameters offriction stir welding on the microstructure and mechanical behaviors was investigatedexperimentally.In the first chapter of study, an introduction is given. In the second chapter, aluminiumand its alloys were given. In the third chapter, welding techniques which use for welding ofaluminium alloys are presented. In the fourth chapter, friction stir welding is presented. In thefifth chapter, literature dealing with friction stir welding is given. In the sixth chapter, theexperimental studies, in the seven chapter the results and discutions of the experiments aregiven.As a result, in friction stir welding of ETIAL-3 aluminium alloy, by choosing rotationalspeed, traverse speed properly, it is possible to increse the quality of jointed metals.Key words: Friction, Friction stir welding, Aluminium alloys, Solid state welding.
