Abstract (EN)

The aim of our study is to analyze the effect of the nasal tampons on histology of nasal cavity and microbiological growth of nasal cavity. In this research, the experiments were conducted using 36 New Zealand male rabbits weighting between 1.9- 2.2 kg at Abant Izzet Baysal University (AIBU) Medical School Animal Laboratory, Department of Microbiology and Department of Histology in between 2011-2013. The rabbits were divided into six groups. For each subgroup specified nasal packing were used. The tampons were kept in for 48 hours and removed. Right after the nasal packing removal and after 5 days, the specimens from both nasal passages and maxillary sinus obtained by nasal swab were analyzed microbiologically. Paraffin embedded nasal and sinus cavity sections were examined for surface endothelial integrity, oedema, cilia loss, goblet cells hyperplasia and gland structure. Based on the histologic examinations, it has been identified that nasal packing with sesame oil and nitrofurazone were more effective for the productivity of mucosal oedema and congestion and the decrease of inflammatory cell numbers. It has been also shown that nitrofurazone was more effective mucosal defense however it is not statistically significant. It was observed that sesame oil is not better than nitrofurazone histologically. Based on the microbiological examination, sesame oil was more effective for bacterial growth repression than nitrofurazone at day 5 whereas sesame oil resulted in more bacterial growth at day 0 compared to other subgroups. For future, nasal packing with sesame oil is thought to be advantageous for both histologically and microbiologically however it needs to be further evaluated.
