Abstract (EN)

A total 44 male and female Holstein calves were used to investigate the effect of method of feeding of roughage during preweaning on growth performance of Holstein calves in postweaning period. Calves were allocated two experimental groups according to their birth weights. The first group was fed with calf starter and ground lucerne hay (1?2 cm lengths) along with 4 L whole milk/day, and the second group was fed with calf starter only. After 8 week weaning period, all calves were fed with a total mixed diet containin 40% calf grower and 60% alfalfa hay sized 1-2 cm for 8 weeks. The study was carried out 2 (feeding method) x 2 (sex) factorial arrangement in a completely randomised desing. The results suggested that the calves receving calf starter only during preweaning period consumed more feed and gained more live weight after weaning and calves may be raised without roughage in preweaning period.
