Ill ABSTRACT A FINITE ELEMENT MODEL FOR DELAMINATION WEAR Kubilay ASLANTAŞ Education of Machine Working Branch Afyon Kocatepe University Science Institute July 2000 Counsellor: Assistant Professor Süleyman TAŞGETÎREN Machine components are generally work in contact with each other. When contacting surfaces have a relative motion, applied normal and tangential forces cause some stresses on surface and subsurface. If these stresses are applied continuously several voids nucleates at some depth from the surface. The sliding effect on the surface applies compressive and shearing stresses to these voids to generate cracks. When the cracks reach a critical length, it penetrates to surface and breaks away from the surface. This is called delamination wear. In this study, several cracks lengths and friction coefficient are considered. Behaviour of the crack is investigated under these variables. The stress intesity factors Ki and Kn and the J integral calculations are carried out for this purpose. The analysis is done by using the finite element method. Several computer programs are developed by using FORTRAN and BASIC languages.
