The peoples and cultures of Germania in the work of tacitus

The people of the Mediterranean World have always described the peoples of Central and Northern Europe outside their borders as barbarians. Especially, meeting the Germanic peoples' forces united under the leadership of Ariovistus during the Gallia campaign initiated by Iulius Caesar in 58 BC, the Romans started the need to know the culture of this people. In the following years, military relations between the Germanic peoples and Rome also improved with the three great expeditions that Augustus organized to conquer Germania during his empire. Some tribes quickly accepted Roman sovereignty and established close relations with it. However, Rome's attempt to gather these tribes under its rule caused the tribes to revolt. Because of these friendships and wars, the Romans got to know the culture and life of the Germanic peoples more closely. Tacitus created the Germania work by compiling the information obtained until the end of the 1st century, when these wars were intense, and succeeded in explaining the culture of the relatively newly recognized Germanic people. Therefore, in our study, we examined the culture of the Germanic people based on the work of Tacitus.
