Determination of the recreational potential of tanay nature park

The rapidly increasing urban population and chaotic urbanization are raising the need for green spaces day by day. In this context, urban afforestation and city forests help ensure that people remain connected to nature. Turkey has many places that attract considerable attention due to their natural beauty, landscapes, and endemic plant species. In these areas, the sea, rivers, lakes, forests, and historic cities are some of the key elements that capture people's attention. It is crucial for people to engage in recreation, connect with nature, and have easy access to these areas without damaging these elements or disrupting the natural balance. This is important both in terms of tourism benefits and city promotion. At the same time, these areas are of great significance due to their psychological and physical benefits to individuals. This study aimed to determine the recreational potential of Tanay Nature Park in the Çeşme district of İzmir, which is frequently visited by day-trip visitors and tourists. For this purpose, the Gülez method, which includes criteria such as landscape value, accessibility, climatic value, recreational facilities, and negative factors, was used. On-site observations and assessments were conducted to evaluate these elements. As a result of the study, the recreational potential value of Tanay Nature Park was found to be 70% (high). It has also been identified that some parts of the walking paths and picnic areas in the park have old, broken, and rusted lighting poles, along with infrastructure faults and security and maintenance deficiencies. These factors are among the obstacles preventing the park from reaching a wider audience. To better utilize the park's high recreational potential, significant improvements and investments are needed. The planned renovations and upgrades could enhance both the visual and functional quality of the park, potentially increasing visitor numbers and contributing to the region's tourism economy.
