in AN INVESTIGATION ON WETTING PROPERTIES OF TTJNMSH REFRACTORY (MgO)-MOLTEN STEEL INTERFACE (Ph. D. Thesis) Yunus TÜREN GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTTJTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY November 2003 ABSTRACT In this study, wettability between tundish fining (MgO) and molten steel was investigated by using sessile drop method. The research, was carried out by altering the variables below;. Fiber addition to MgO (glass fiber» carbon fiber, rock wool, alumina fiber, paper fiber, castamide fiber). Powder addition to MgO (day, hematite). Particle size of MgO powder. Contact time. Temperature. Composition of steel Experimental results revealed that wetting angle (6) of sessile drop on the MgO was not altered by the addition of glass fiber up to lwt.% whereas above 2 wt% addition decreased the 0 considerably. Increase in 0 was achived by addition of C fiber, however, no change in 8 was observed by using castamide, rock wool, alumina or paper fiber. Additions of clay or FesOa powders reduced die 0 significantly, however, effect of the latter in reduction of 0 was moreIV pronounced. Wetting angle, 0, increased considerably with increasing MgO particle size. Increasing contact time and test temperature reduced the 8 notably. Wetting angle, 6, of molten steel» containing up to 0,04 wt% C, was not altered. Considerable increase in the 0 was observed as the C content exceeded the level of 0,04 wt %. On the other hand, addition of Mn also reduced the 6 considerably.
