The relationship of God-concept with attachment styles and marital satisfaction in married couples

The effects of belief in God on the psychological dimension are generally analyzed within the framework of the concept of God. In this study, it is aimed to examine the relationship between the concept of God and attachment to God and the attachment styles and marital satisfaction of married couples. The sample of the study consists of 237 married individuals (162 women, 75 men) aged 18 and over. A questionnaire form prepared through Google Forms was used in the data collection process. The questionnaire form includes "Personal Information Form" to determine demographic characteristics, "Perception of God Scale" to measure the concept of God, "Three Dimensional Attachment Styles Scale" to determine adult attachment styles, "Marital Life Scale" to determine marital satisfaction, and "Attachment to God Scale" to determine the attachment style to God. The data were analyzed with SPSS for Windows 25.0 package program. Frequency and percentage were used for descriptive statistical parameters of personal information, and 'Reliability Analysis' was performed for the reliability of the scales. The data obtained were compared, the difference between two independent groups was analyzed using t test and Mann Whitney U test, the difference between more than two independent groups was analyzed using analysis of variance and Kruskal Wallis analysis. Spearman coefficient was used to test the relationship between the scales and sub-dimensions. According to the findings, it was determined that the sample group had high positive God-concept and marital satisfaction scores; that demographic variables such as gender, income, education level, place of residence and parental attitudes had no effect on God-concept; and that marital satisfaction scores did not change according to income, education, place of residence and parental attitudes. Another result obtained in the study was that marital satisfaction scores differed according to gender, and it was found that men had higher marital satisfaction scores. It was concluded that as secure attachment, secure attachment to God and positive conceptions of God increase, marital satisfaction increases; as insecure attachment, insecure attachment to God and negative conceptions of God increase, marital satisfaction decreases; individuals with positive conceptions of God are securely attached to others and God, while individuals with negative conceptions of God are insecurely attached to others and God.
