Abstract (EN)
This study examines the impact of the change and transformation process, which began with the Tanzimat Reform Era in the Ottoman State and which manifested itself in almost every cadre of the state, on the penal institutions and the architecture thereof. Within the scope of the Thesis, the plans are obtained from the archives of the Presidency, are very important for understanding the prison reform contemplated by the Ottoman rulers during the process, which began with the Tanzimat Reform Era. Within this scope, the radial plans that are obtained from the archive and that were planned for the cities of Izmir, Istanbul and Ankara and the prison projects, which were designed in Yedikule and which in a way are in campus format, have been examined in detail. The basic purpose of this Thesis is to assess the spatial reflections of the reforms, which were planned specifically for the prisons in Izmir Ankara and primarily Istanbul over the planning arrangements that we never witnesses before in the Ottoman state as prison reforms despite difficult position surrounding the state. At the conclusion of the Thesis, the studies that were conducted during Tanzimat Reform Era for materializing the prison reform and the resources mobilized thereto have been examined over prison architectures.
