Abstract (EN)

The reforms which were carried into effect in trials of modernization at Ottoman Empire brought about many important changements in urban spaces. With the new bureaucratic organization model which were put into practice after Tanzimat, the establishement of publishing, Cağaloğlu became one of the most famous city center of 19th century's İstanbul. Cağaloğlu was a place always in contact with menagement and administrative places and culture area both in Ottoman period and the Turkey republic period. The combination of these places gained a political and culturel identity to the city. Pirincipally Bâbıâli complexe and the bureaucratic institutions around it, then economic and political institutions, political party centers, association, schools are spatial indicators of political identity of city. And the main places forming the culturel identity of the city are the printing houses, newspaper offices, coffe houses and bookstores. In this thesis, Cağaloğlu's political and cultural identity were analyzed through places in city. Cağaloğlu was considered as a memory place of and the changements and the transformation of which the city had experienced in between 1840-1950 were discussed througt these two identities which take place in collective memory.
