After Tanzimat Turkish architecture in Sanjak of Karahisar-ıSahip

When it came to the very end of 18th century, the Ottoman intellectuals, who realized that the political and military power of the state remained inferior to that of the Western states, initiated a series of reforms in such fields as administration, education, transportation, economy and especially military in order to gain the state its previous splendor. Having been characterized with a much more institutional identity by means of these reforms, the state administration constructed thousands of edifices which could reflect the state ideology ever at the most isolated parts of imperial geography. However, it should not be underestimated that the construction of such traditional edifices as mosque, fountain and bath was kept on along with those new types of edifice referred above, which is today defined as public buildings among the academic circles of art history. Assessing the constructional movements within the boundaries of the sanjak Karahisar-ı Sahip, this thesis aims under the light of Ottoman archival documents and the related bibliographical sources at finding scientific answers the questions towards how that a dying dynasty managed to construct edifices at a level that could compete with those at the golden ages, how it created the required sources for the construction, whether the edifices were built in line with the outlines sent by the central government or by the initiative of local masters, and whether these buildings represent the architectural styles of the age.
