Abstract (EN)

In this study, the vocabulary of geographical terms in the Tarama Sözlüğü has been analyzed. Vocabulary refers to all the words used by the speakers of a language to express their emotions, thoughts, and perspectives. In this context, geographical terms in the Tarama Sözlüğü were examined. The geographical terms identified in the dictionary were classified under the subcategories of physical geography and human geography. Physical geography encompasses subfields such as biogeography, climatology, and hydrography, while human geography includes fields such as population, settlement, and historical geography. During the analysis, the current usage of the identified terms in modern Turkish was also examined. It was observed that some terms continue to be used in both standard variants and dialects. However, some terms have undergone semantic shifts in standard variants and dialects and are no longer used as "geographical terms." Additionally, it was determined that some terms are no longer used in either standard Turkish or regional dialects. The centuries in which geographical terms in the Tarama Sözlüğü were used are also presented in the study. Examples of the works where these terms appeared are provided along with their witnesses. The primary aim of the thesis is to identify the vocabulary related to geography in the Tarama Sözlüğü. This study serves as an important resource for future dictionary studies focused on language and geography.
