Investigation of antimicrobial activity of cinnamon oil and clove oil by microbiological assay

Abstract (EN)
INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the antimicrobial efficiency of individual and combinations of cinnamon and clove essential oils on some microorganisms, to determine the optimum dose and to determine the areas to be studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study, cinnamon and clove essential oils were used as antimicrobial agents. Some microorganisms in the group of bacterium, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14027, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, and in the fungus group Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC 16404 were examined. 10 different dilutions of essential oils were prepared and antimicrobial effect was investigated by spreading plate method in fungi and disc diffusion method in bacteria. RESULTS: As a result of antimicrobial efficiency studies of cinnamon and clove oils separately and in combination, different 10 dilutions and the most effective results were observed on the dilutions of 50%. In the liquid medium macrodilution test, the MIC findings of clove oil were 0.78% in all studied bacteria, and 3.125% in E. coli and P. aeruginosa, 0.78% in S. aureus and B. subtilis, and 0.78% in S. typhimurium. 6,250%. The cinnamon and clove oil combination had an MIC of 0.78% in E. coli, S. typhimurium, P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, and 6.25% in B. subtilis. C. albicans and A. brasiliensis smear plate study, it was determined that the combination of essential oils separately and prevented reproduction as a result of observation for 10 days. CONCLUSION: The essential oils we used in the study were found to have a significant inhibitory effect on the microorganisms used in the study. The nominal values obtained will be guiding in different studies aimed at the use of oils and microorganisms used in the study.
