The use of cartoons in teaching history

In this study, the use of cartoons as a material in teaching history was examined in terms of students? success, having been compared with the traditional teaching method. The application was accomplished selecting two sample groups consisting of 55 2nd grade students in the Turkish Armed Forces NCO College of Band Schools. The determined subjects were taught to the experiment group using cartoons, and to the control group using the traditional teaching method including the methods of question-answer. In the study, the following subjects which are included in the Republican Period Unit, included in the curriculum of Turkish Republican history and Kemalism, were taught: 1. Revolutions accomplished in the political area, 1.1. The abolition of the sultanate, 1.2. The declaration of the Republic, 1.3. The abolition of the Caliphate, 1.4. Constitutional Movements . 1.4.1. The constitutional decisions taken with the opening of the first Grand Turkish National Assembly. 1.4.2. The constitution, dated January 20, 1921, 1.4.3. The constitution, dated April 20, 1924 , 1.5. Attempts of transition to multiparty period and the reactions to the reform. 1.5.1. The groups in the first Grand Turkish National Assembly. 1.5.2. The foundation of Defence of Law Group and its transforming into Republican People?s Party . 1.5.3. The foundation of the political parties and the opposition movements. v 1.5.3.1. The opposition in the first Grand Turkish National Assembly. 1.5.3.2. Progressive Republican Party Free Republican Party Other Parties. 1.5.4. National Festivals and public holiday. 3.6. The recognition of the rights of women, in the experiment group using education materials, and in the control group using the traditional teaching method. The data of the research were collected by means of a pretest about the subjects taught before the research subjects, and by means of a post-test about the subjects included in the research. vi The findings related to the sub-problems of the research were analyzed using independent ?t test in SPSS software. The result of the application and the evaluation indicates that the students learning the history using ?cartoons? were found more successful in the subjects of ?Republican Period? than the students learning in the traditional method.
