Abstract (EN)

Architecture is not only a profession based on designing structures; but also a form of representation of the social dynamics within the context of all the aspects that it contains. Besides being a professional in forming the physical layer of space, architect should be able to understand all external factors, which are affecting the formation of space. Thus, architect should generate predictable ideas about the future of place, relating to city's dynamics. These predictions are important in today's architectural practice for better understanding of a city and architecture. This thesis is about transformation of public spaces, in which, transformation processes are examined with the perspective of abandoned movie theaters. Istanbul and Rome have been compared with each other for centuries, which caused Istanbul, to be mentioned as 'second Rome' in history. This comparison became a source of inspiration for the thesis. The author, who personally experienced cities of Rome and Istanbul as a student, architect and resident, has proceeded the research by making a comparison of these two historic metropolises. With this aim, the author investigated spatial transformation of historic movie theaters, regarding them as public spaces. Afterwards, the study continued by cross-readings and comparisons about reactions of Italian and Turkish citizens who were against to commodification of public spaces. This comparison is not a generalized model, however, it is a common observation issued within the framework of the cases examined. All these examples describe the relationship between the community and the authority were analyzed to understand the established bond between the city and architecture.
