Analysis and evaluation of North Egean settlements in the context of historical buildings and fabric (Ayvalik and Mytilene sample)

In this study, it is aimed to analyze the housing pattern built in the 19th century in the cities of Ayvalık, Mytilene and Plomari, which are North Aegean settlements, comparatively. The settlements in question reflect similarities due to their spatial proximity as well as their commercial and cultural interactions in the historical process. General factors such as climate, vegetation, ethnic origin of the inhabitants, political regime, economic activities and laws are effective in shaping the settlements. Topographic structure, accessibility, people active in cities and special factors that create positive or negative breaks in urban life have also determined the formation in question. In the study, which is handled with a historical and comparative method, detailed information about the formation of cities was collected by literature review, and analyzes were carried out at the scale of urban texture and housing with field studies. The factors that cause similarities and differences in the residential texture of the settlements and in the scale of a single building were determined. It is aimed to compare the housing structures built in the same period in the cities of Mytilene, Plomari and Ayvalık, showing similar and different characteristics, in terms of materials, plans, facades, structural features and details, and to determine under which effects the settlements were shaped. The periodical examination of the 19th century residences of the three coastal cities reflecting the olive city character, taking into account the ruptures in the settlements, and the determination of change and continuity by comparing the examples from the same period and successive periods were in question.
