Abstract (EN)
Death Image that Differentiates from Primitive Era to Medieval TimesPeople of primitive societies, who were a part of a structure coordinated in accordance with the collective consciousness, did not have an idea of death similar to today?s modern man. The reason for this that it was impossible in a life that the feelings of self, identity and possession and integrity of universe. The idea of death as an end is basically an economic problem. In a life that based on individualism, and possession in conjunction with the idea of self, death emerged as a frightening reality.People?s primary self concern was to protect their self, which was their basic possession. The fear of death had pushed people to give a meaning to their existence and consequently pushed them to build their identical. In consequence of the need for defining and giving a meaning to the unknown, myths, which was a language primarily based upon indicators and symbols were created. Within the process from primitive societies to modern societies, death image was represented as a shadow in the first patterns. With the Greek Mythology, the death image had reached the form as in the modern human?s mind, and alienated as if the other by the human shaped personifications. The alienization of death as if the other and the presentation of the alienated as a harming stranger became evident in conjunction with economic factors in 16th century and death phenomenon takes its today?s place in modern human?s mind. In modern times, death is treated as an alien like other alienated things and repressed. With denied identity and existence, death and the other in modern times turned into a frightening, exasperated thing, and considered as a treat for the self limits. Modern human perceived his appearance, reflection and the other as an enemy. Being ruled out in modern times, death caused people to withdraw and close themselves.Similar to primitive times, in modern times, a deep pursuit of meaning was the point in question. Different existence definitions appeared in the direction of pursuit of a meaning is being followed in cogitation and art movements. People?s concern about searching for the core, the structure, and the form, can be followed from Impressionism, the first modern art movement, to Dada movement, which aims to remove the modern subject and put the object in the center where the meaning can be changeable.Death and the Other, associated with each other within the concept of this thesis, are appointed as the reference point of the self. In modern times, everything other than the self were described as eerie other. The self that was looking for the meaning within itself ignored the other. But today, the self is gravitating to destroy itself. The project created within the concept of this thesis themed as ?Objects In The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear?. The mirrors and the portraits they reflect aim to symbolically unite the self and the other that separated with the shredded integrity. The mirror images are the others that shape the self.
