Abstract (EN)
This comprehensive research investigates the historical perspective of the art of horn playing, specifically the usage of the right hand inside the bell and its effects on both basic and advanced playing techniques. The unique structure and timbral qualities of the horn and especially the use of the right hand inside the bell, have a significant impact on sound quality and intonation. The primary aim of the research is to thoroughly examine the precise effects of right-hand usage on the instrument's timbre and intonation. Additionally, this study explores the spread of right-hand usage in written works and the differences in usage in music written after the 20th century. This extensive review addresses a topic that has a significant impact on both performance practice and educational applications. The study considers the potential effects of right-hand usage inside the bell on the overall sound and playability of the instrument, and how this could expand the performance and musical expression of the musicians playing the instrument. Methodologically, this thesis adopts a qualitative framework, addressing the literature analysis and analysis of different right-hand positions inside the bell, recording the sounds played and carefully examining these recordings. This approach is of critical importance for better understanding and evaluating the effect of right-hand usage on the timbral characteristics and intonation levels of the instrument. In conclusion, this thesis has the potential to fill a significant knowledge gap in the Turkish literature on this topic and to assist horn teaching in Turkey. The findings of this study underscore the noticeable impact of right-hand usage inside the bell on the instrument's overall sound, intonation, and playability. Therefore, it draws attention to the possibility of helping both the musicians playing the instrument and the educators to learn and teach these techniques more effectively. This study sheds light on how the use of the right hand affects the general aspects of the art of horn playing and the historical and modern interpretations of the instrument.
