Abstract (EN)

Emperor Heraclius reigned as a Roman (Byzantine) Emperor from 610 to 641. His reign coincided with a tumultuous period for the Roman Empire, marked by the 602-628 Roman-Sasanian War, the last major war of antiquity. He ascended to the throne through a coup and was obliged to defend his empire against the Sasanians, their historical enemies. Despite a successful defense, he never had the opportunity to celebrate his victory, as he soon found himself embroiled in conflicts first with the Prophet Muhammad, then with Caliphs Abu Bakr and Umar. He ultimately relinquished the territories he had rescued from the Sasanians to the Muslims. Heraclius is not only significant for his political and military history but also known as a socio-cultural and religious reformer due to his reforms. He implemented profound changes within the empire, leading to the transformation of the Roman Empire into the Byzantine Empire. Together with his closest ally Patriarch Sergius, he introduced the Monothelitism doctrine, which he legalized through the Ecthesis. Although Heraclius's religious reforms were short-lived, he is remembered in history as an emperor who attempted to achieve church unity. While historical sources provide information about Emperor Heraclius, there are also traditions and legends surrounding him in the collective memory. Interacting with three major monotheistic religions due to his position and the geographical location of the empire, we have examined how these traditions and tales, passed down as legends and prophecies, align with the historical Heraclius. We found that while some of these traditions persist today, others are merely glorifications with little historical basis. Considering Emperor Heraclius as a pivotal figure who initiated the Byzantine Middle Ages with his reforms, this qualitative study focuses on his exceptional character and reforms of his era, utilizing a literature review methodology.
