Abstract (EN)

In Section 1 of the thesis, the trend lines and the growth functions of agricultural output, agricultural employment and the average productivity of agricultural labor for Spain, S. Korea and Turkey in the 1980-2008 period were derived and the developments thereof were interpreted. Then, after calculating the two variables which give the ratios of (eovT)t in Spain and in Korea on one hand and that of Turkey on the other [ ((eovT)t)İSP / ((eovT)t)TR and ((eovT)t )KOR / ((eovT)t )TR ], the trend lines and the growth functions for these two variables were derived so that as to see how these three countries compare in terms of their performance as regards achieving increases in the average productivity of agricultural labor in the 1980-2008 period. In section 1, this was clearly indicated by the striking differences in these three countries with respect to the rate of change in QT and LT that had occurred in the 1980-2008 period: QT rose 148% in Turkey, 169% in Spain and only 69% in Korea; but LT in Spain and Korea declined a whopping 4.16 and 6.02 times, respectively, while it declined only 1.12 times in Turkey in the said period. In Section 2, there is great discrepancy between LT series of FAO and ILO because FAO figures add the estimated disguised employment to official figures reported by TÜİK and ILO does not. However, once this has been done the said ?insurmountable problem? can be circumvented by working with TN instead of LT.If TN continues to decline at an increasing rate as had been the case during the past 22 years, then it is quite possible for the average rate of yearly decline to top 3% within a decade and to top 4% in the next --in which case the agricultural sector in Turkey may well experience a transformation similar to that which had occurred in Korea in the quarter century between 1980 and 2008. However if achieved this would mean a substantial increase in the yearly rate of migration from the agricultural to the non-agricultural sectors and this entails serious challenges. The major conclusions reached in this thesis may be said to imply a need for further research in these important areas of inquiry.
