Undesigned spaces

The general interaction between the human life and physical environment is what distinguishes architectural space from ?wild nature?. While architectural space is an internal part of human experience, man is continuously transforming spatial environment. If in the definiton of architectural space is based on multi-dimensional human life, undesigned spaces have to be seen as a component of architectural environment such as designed ones.In the introduction part, modern spatial approaches is critisized and particular theoretical instruments are mentioned in order to able to describe every place on the earth, which is in relation to any dynamics of human life, in architectural terms.Most of the architectural tendencies, considers human being in an abstract and common level instead of perceiving it as an intrinsic part of the architecture. In the second part, the texts of the influential architects from Sakızlı Ohannes to Turgut Cansever is analysed in this frame. Rather than containing concrete substances of individual and social life, the two key concepts belonging to modern architectural approaches, ?user? and ?basic requirements? are implying prototypes of human being.In the third part, divers points of view to the built environment and interrelations of urban constructive forces are proposed in order to break through the constant frame of correlation between human being and space. In this perspective some observations on the relationship between space and human being is made by emhasizing their distinctive qualities from the classical outlines of architectural space. Places such as coffehouses and slums or the house of Tevfik Fikret in Aşiyan are investigated.The philosphical discussions in the background of architecture is expanded in the context of the connection of space to human being in the modern Western philosophy. The thoughts of several philosophers from Newton to Foucault and Lefebvre is summurized in referance to how they define the concepts of space and place.Lastly, key concepts for a theoretical approach is developed which conceives human life with its multi-dimensinal context and regards every space which has any kind of relation to human life as architectural space.
