Interior design criteria and exhibition units in design museums

As a result of the industrial revolution and mechanization in the 19th century, design museums emerged and became widespread in the world in the 20th century. Design museums have become important channels for documenting design products and promoting the design identity of the society. At this point, the efforts to establish a design museum in our country have also gained momentum. In this study, it is aimed to contribute to the literature by making a preliminary study for a design museum to be established in Turkey. Design museums are discussed and evaluated in terms of interior design criteria and exhibition elements. In the study, the ADI Design Museum, which was opened in Milan in 2021, was evaluated within the scope of organization-function, circulation and orientation, information, furnishing and reinforcement elements, material, color, texture and lighting. The exhibition elements of the ADI Design Museum are limited to permanent exhibitions. In this study, with the qualitative research method, the documents obtained by scanning the literature were analyzed and evaluated through observation on visuals and plans. In the study, the existence process of design museums and contemporary design museums were examined in terms of interior design criteria in design museums. While designing the interiors and exhibition elements of a contemporary design museum, concepts such as visitor interaction and perception, security, and sustainability come to the fore. At this point, the interiors of the ADI Design Museum were analyzed and evaluated on the basis of the determined criteria. In addition, permanent display elements were grouped according to their types and evaluated. It is thought that the data obtained as a result of the evaluation of the ADI Design Museum will be beneficial for a design museum that can be established in our country and will guide the work that can be done.
