Evaluation of medical and surgical nurses' knowledge and self-efficacy in preventing and managing medical device-related pressure injuries

Abstract (EN)

This study aimed to assess the knowledge and self-efficacy levels of medical and surgical nurses in preventing and managing medical device-related pressure injuries (MDRPIs). This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 262 nurses from medical and surgical units in two hospitals. Data were collected between October 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024, using the "Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries Knowledge and Practice Assessment Tool" and the "Pressure Ulcer Management Self-Efficacy Scale for Nurses." The mean knowledge score of the nurses was 11.28±3.29, and the mean self-efficacy score was 64.46±22.52. A significant relationship was found between the total average knowledge scores regarding MDRPIs and factors such as age, type of institution, and having a certified training (p<0,05). A significant relationship was found between nurses' sociodemographic characteristics, age, and their total average self-efficacy scores (p<0.05). The study revealed that nurses' knowledge and practices related to MDRPI prevention and management were inadequate, while their self-efficacy levels were only slightly above average. These findings highlight the need for targeted educational interventions to improve nurses' knowledge and self-efficacy concerning MDRPIs. Implementing self-efficacy training programs is recommended to enhance nurses' abilities in identifying high-risk patients, performing accurate assessments, developing appropriate care plans, monitoring, and making evidence-based clinical decisions.
