The assessment of medical professional education programs and practices according to "Joint Commission International Academic Medical Center Hospitals Standards - Fifth Edition" in the framework of academic cooperation: An example of Dokuz Eylül University Hospital

Objective: Patient and organizational structure oriented quality and accreditation systems have been developed to evaluation of the institutions within the health system in order to improve the quality of patient care at an optimal level in the world. These systems are minimize the risks for patients and employees with a safe patient care, improve quality and ensure the continuity of patient safety. The Joint Commission International (JCI) identifies measures and shares best practices in health quality and patient safety in all countries. To create assessment scales based on the JCI standards and criteria used, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the "JCI Academic Medical Center Hospital standards" in a Medical School included in the National Medical Education Accreditation system and a university hospital that provides health services according to the quality standards in health. Method: Based on JCI- Hospital Standards, (Including Academic Medical Center Hospital Standards) and Medical Professional Education Standards, 3 separate assessment scales were developed for intern and medical students, trainee residents and Faculty Members. These scales were applied to medical school students, residents of medical school members participating in the applications at Dokuz Eylül University Hospital. The data obtained were evaluated statistically by one-way ANOVA test. Results: According to the responses given to the assessment scales, the highest rate of agreement with the opinion that the requirements of the "Medical Professional Education Standards" of JCI can met according to the medical students, residents and educators whom participating in the practices in the hospital was found to be 37.4%. The general tendency of all participants that the contents of the stipulated standards are not realized for themselves or they do not have any idea was determined as the lowest 62.6% and the highest 80.4%. Conclusion: The "Medical Professional Education Commission / Committee", which consists of an administrative and academic organization in the top management of the hospital, must be structured in order to maintain and monitor applied medical professional education programs that provide qualified and standard student skills and experience and to integrate them with the international care and patient safety standards applied in the hospital.
