The relationship of tafsir and kalam in context of the tafsir introductions

This study, which investigates the nature of the relationship between tafsir and the science of kalam, has been carried out in the context of the tafsir introductions of Râgıb, Ebü's-Senâ, Âlûsi, Nursi and İbn Âşûr, which present a rich content in terms of the relationship between tafsir and kalam. In the first part of the study, a detailed analysis of each introduction in terms of tafsir method has been made and the importance of introductions and their contributions to the field have been tried to be shown. In the second part, theological problems dwelled on in the aforementioned introductions were classified according to their subjects and dealt with. In the third part, the nature and dimensions of the tafsir-kalam relationship were investigated by referring to the concept of compiled (müdevven) science and the foundations of unity and partnership between sciences. The results of the research showed that the relationship between tafsir and kalam is at the level of being (mawzû'), knowledge (mabâdî) and purpose (masâil) within the framework of theological problems included in the introductions and the classical understanding of science. According to this, first of all, the science of kalam provides the possibility of existence for the Qur'an, which is the main subject of tafsir, by justifying its being the word of Allah on the theoretical ground. At the second level, the science of kalam gives the knowledge principles to the science of tafsir by determining the basic theoretical and metaphysical background that tafsir needs, that is, the principles of knowledge, theology, prophecy and eschatalogy, on the basis of scripture and reason. The third level of the relationship between tafsir and kalam is related to common purposes. In other words, it is the use of theological knowledge in order to better understand, elaborate and expand the original purposes of the Qur'an at the stage of tafsir. In order to eliminate the disconnection between tafsir and other Islamic sciences and to increase interdisciplinary relations, these kinds of studies should increasingly continue.
