On the nature of tafsir: The approach of Muhammed al-Tahir İbn Ashur to ilm al-tafsir as a systematic science

The main purpose of this study is to shade light on the problems the science of Tafsir which emerged with the expansion of Islamic sciences in the classical period and became even deeper in the modern age through the solutions proposed by Ibn Ashur. This thesis, which deals with the problems related to the essence of Tafsir, consists of four chapters: Introduction, two main chapters and conclusion. In the introduction, general information is given about the subject, scope, aim, literature review, method and sources of the research. In the first part, Ibn Ashur's explanations about the nature of the Qur'an are discussed in the light of the sacred commentaries of al-Tahrir wa'l-Tanwir. In the second part some evaluations are carried out related to the subjects such as the definition which determines the nature of Tafsir, the themes of Tafsir, and the sciences from which Tafsir is benefited. The opinions of Ibn Ashur about the legitimacy of Tafsir, and the subjects which are necessary to be learnt for the beginners who want to study at this field are the other titles mentioned in this part. In the conclusion part, Ibn Ashur's solution proposals and final evaluations about the nature of Tafsir are specified.
