The effect of the shooting percentages from 5 different zones on the play-off standings of the wheelchair Basketball Super League Play-off teams

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the shots from different zones on the tournament standings in the wheelchair basketball. Material and Method: 8 Wheelchair Basketball Super League Teams (Galatasaray, Besiktaş HDI Insurance, Fenerbahçe, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Gazişehir Gaziantep, Turkish Armed Forces Rehabilitation Center, Bağcılar Municipality, and Altınordu) featuring in the Play-offs which was organized by the Turkish Sports Federation for The Physically Disabled and a total of 60 male athletes from these teams participated in this study. The age, height, and weight parameters of the wheelchair basketball players participating in this study were recorded and their classification scores were taken. Afterwards, the shots from 5 different zones at a distance of 4.224m were observed and recorded. Statistical analysis, descriptive statistics and chi-square (Chi-Square) tests were performed using the SPSS 20 program. Findings: The age, height, weight, and the body mass index (BMI) averages of the wheelchair basketball players participating in the study were 32.733±6.834 years, 177.250±12.512 cm, 80.966±13.370 kg, and 25.596±1.397 kg/m2, respectively. When the effect of the shots from 5 zones on the play-off standings was analyzed, it was found that the success percentage of the shots from the 3rd zone had an effect on the play-off standings (p<0.05); however, the success percentages of the shots from the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th zones had no effect on the play-off standings (p>0.05). Conclusion: As a result of the study, it was observed that only the success percentage of the shots from the 3rd zone (at the 12 o'clock position of the backboard) had an effect on the play-off standings. So, it can be asserted that increasing the number of the shots from the zone at the 12 o'clock position of the backboard will provide positive effects to teams in league competitions, play-off or other tournaments by training, increasing the average number of points.
