ABSTRACT Phd Thesis INVESTIGATE OF SIZE EFFECT IN BEARING STRENGTH OF THE INDIVIDUAL FOOTING Erdinç ARICI Firat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Conctraction Education 2003, Page: 89 Bearing failure in reinforced concrete structures generally occurs by splitting of the concrete in the foundation when column with high strength bases on the foundation with low strength. Anchor plates in prestressed concrete structures, bridge bearings over piers, beams over concrete columns, etc. are a few instances of bearing problems. Although design codes proposes specific criterions to avoid from this failure situation, they do not consider size effect which is an important phenomenon in the fracture mechanics of concrete/reinforced concrete. In this study, 22 series of concrete cube and prismatic specimens, of which the agregate sizes are 4, 8 and 16 mm, and geometrically similar of different sizes (size range=l:4) were tested by bear loading. Failure loads of specimens were analysed by Size Effect Law (SEL) and Multi-Fractal Size Effect Law (MSEL).
