Assessment of chemical injuries in Tekirdağ province

Abstract (EN)

It is known that there are more than 100,000 varieties of chemicals used in all areas of life today, and an average of 500 million tons are produced and released to the market every year. During the use of chemicals, various chemical injuries may develop due to negligence, intent, or accident. Because the pathophysiologies of these cases are different, although they form a small part in all injuries, their mortality and morbidity rates are high. In order to determine the frequency of chemical injuries, Tekirdag province, which has a population population of metropolitan status, with large industrial activities and large agricultural land, was chosen as the study region, which we think has a high contact with chemical madderle. By evaluating the chemical injury data of the province, it is aimed to determine the risks of chemical injury of the region, to present ideas about measures and to contribute to the literature in this way. In order to determine the frequency and characteristics of chemical injuries,between 01.01.2016 and 01.09.2019, 112 emergency medical services units affiliated to Tekirdag Provincial Health Directorate were retrospectively examined. Cases showing chemical injury characteristics; factory type to mess with chemicals, pesticide poisoning, corrosive substance injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning, respiratory toxicity, chemicals that cause chemical burns, chemical explosions, and other injuries as a result of contact with chemicals were categorized as unspecified cause. The data obtained were recorded in the SPSS program and statistical analysis was performed. 1858 cases consistent with chemical injuries were identified and included in our study. 47.3% of cases (n=879) were found to be carbon monoxide, (n=297) 16.0% were corrosive, (n=192) 10.3% were Factory-type chemicals, (n=285) 15.3% were unknown chemicals, (n=128) 6.9% were respiratory poisoning chemicals and (n=77) 4.1% were caused by other chemical causes. Of all chemical injuries (n=804), 43.3% were female and (N=1054) 56.7% were male. Distribution by season; it was found that 29.1% of cases (n=541) were in spring, (n=445) 24.0% were in summer, (n=346) 18.6% were in autumn, (n=526) 28.3% were in winter. According to the results of comparing the event time and the cause of impact in our study, the relationship between the variables was significant at 95% confidence level(X2=186.499 p=0.000 p<0.05).; most of the carbon monoxide (n=235) %rate of 26.7 18:00-00:00, from the most corrosive substances (n=125) %rate of 42.1 12:00-18:00, most of the chemicals factory type (n=55) %rate of 28.6 12:00-18:00, unknown to most of chemicals (n=110) %rate of 38.6 12:00-18:00, respiratory toxicity because most of them (n=55) of 43% with a rate of 12:00-18:00 and for other reasons, most (n=32) %41.6% 12:00- 18:00 was effected between. In our study, it was determined that carbon monoxide was the chemical that had the most pathological effect in the region, while corrosive substance injuries, chemicals and injuries whose cause is unknown, industrial toxicological injuries and other chemical injuries were also observed in the study area. This study, conducted to determine the status of chemical injuries, provides insight into the preventive health services that authorities receive by evaluating the results. In addition, the results obtained can be used to raise awareness and create protective campaigns, especially in industrial areas, especially in Tekirdag province. As a result of increased awareness and measures, human and material losses from chemical exposure may be reduced.
