Evaluation of integration of technology supported activities according to 5E model into mathematics education

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study was to design and implement a smart board interactive course module for the teaching of concepts and generalizations related to Circle subject in the 11th-grade geometry curriculum of high schools and to investigate its contribution to the teaching process according to the 5E instructional model based on Constructivist Teaching Approach. In this study, Mixed Methods Research design was used. Two groups of 11th-grade high school students in Afyonkarahisar province during the 2014-2015 academic year were chosen as the participants through the cluster sampling of probability-based sampling methods. One of the classes was labeled as an experimental group and the other one as control group neutrally. The experimental group included 28 students and the control group consisted of 24 students. The experimental group was taught through the Circle Course Module – developed for this study – based on the 5E instructional model and the control group continued to the standard school curriculum. The data for the study were collected through The Smart Board in Mathematics Course Attitude Scale, Student Study Sheets, Unit Evaluation Questions and Student Interview Form. Additionally, the instruction process was videotaped and student interviews were audiotaped. Quantitative data were analyzed by SPSS 23.0 software. Independent samples t-test, dependent samples t-test, one way ANOVA and frequencies were used in the analysis. And the qualitative data were analyzed through descriptive and content analysis methods. The results of the study indicated the positive contributions of designed Circle Course Module to the teaching of circle concept and related generalizations. Statistically significant differences were found between the Unit Evaluation Questions scores of the participant groups in favor of the experimental group. However, there was not a statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of using the smart board in Mathematics courses but some differences were found in some sub-dimensions with regards to some other variables. In general, positive student attitude was observed towards the instruction process and some negative attitudes might be related to the previous experiences of constructivist teaching approach and unwillingness in using cognitive process skills. Finally, the use of Circle Course Model based on the 5E instructional model through the smart boards in teaching Circle subject and the development of interactive instruction modules in Mathematics and other subject fields was suggested.
