Technological developments and their effects on graphic design

Technological developments have always been evolving for reasons like; fulfilling its era's problems, making people's lives easier, solving problems, expanding the limits of the unknown. The developments that are happening in the field of communication and graphic design also had reasons like; making knowledge more accessible, making graphic production easier and keeping up with the new mediums. This thesis examines technological developments effects on graphic design in two chapters. First chapter, starting with the first traces of communication at 15000 BC Lascaux Cave, chronologically defines all the technologies about communication, surfaces, printing, digital technologies, mediums in order to make all the technologies that effected graphic design intelligible. Second chapter; examines the different forms graphic design has taken throughout the time by associating them with the limitations and freedom brought by the explained technologies. To conclude, technologies and designs that have hundreds of years between them are compared in order to explain the effects of technological developments on graphic design and also some speculations are made about the future of technology and design.
