A field study for determining the level of consciousness related to behavior-oriented security management in the textile sector

Textile industry has common occupational health and safety riskis as like each sector. As a feature of textie industry, there are three shifts in many fields as weaving, dyeing and printing. Weaving, dyeing and printing processes of production are very stressful. This type of work causes risk factors as sleep disturbances, communication problems, distraction and therefore high blood pressure and rhythm disturbance. These risk factors increase the tendency to possible work accidents in the sector. Behavior- Oriented Safety Management is a form of management that focuses on behavioral change, neverthless it deals with habit and involuntary behavior. In previous studies of Behavior-Oriented Safety Management, it was mentioned how effective observation in the work enviroment and completing it with a team set up by employeees was in detecting risks. In this study, a survey was conducted to determine a level of awareness about Behavior-Oriented Safety Management in the textile industry where work accidents and risks are high and to comment on its applicabiility. The survey consists of two parts, the first part consists of questions related to work place and work accidents according to the education level and professional experience of the employees, and the second part consists of questions related to the nervous system and psychology according to the level of education regardless of professional experience. As a result of the study, it was brought to the interpretation that the incidents and near miss events triggered by education and different psychological situations with behavior and habits. It was observed that the number of occupational accidents was lower in employees with higher education level and professional experience. Firstly, an OHS culture should be tried to be created in sector and communication gaps should be eliminated. Employees should feel that working conditions are more important than production. This study commented that the Behavior-Oriented Safety Management system should be established in every sector, and that we should bedo more training and awareness-raising activities, especially regarding occupational health and safety.
