Manipulation on textile surfaces and seeking for forms in the context of wearable art

ABSTRACT The fact that textile art has gained a place in the plastic arts has been due to the movements of Art & Crafts, Art Nouveau and the Bauhaus school, which prepared the emergence of wearable art, arguing that craft cannot be separated from art. Manipulation practices on textile surfaces are art works that are based on intensive craft processes and require the ability to apply many textile techniques. In this respect, it has a close relation with the philosophy of wearable art. The aim of this study, which examines manipulation on textile surfaces and clothing forms in the field of wearable art, is to research the traditional textile techniques and experimental methods used in manipulation to serve the manual labor process that is tried to be achieved with wearable art, and to reveal how forms become suitable for wearable art can be acquired on artistic surfaces. On this basis, the traditional and experimental techniques, methods and tools used in the manipulation of textile surfaces are primarily examined and explained with various practices of textile artists. Subsequently, the clothing forms used through the craft and fashion relationship of wearable art are emphasized. The forms that textile artists and designers prefer to use in the context of wearable art with manipulation surfaces have been studied through their works. In order to enhance the subject and create a piece of art, surface manipulation studies have been carried out with many techniques, and the surfaces prepared in the form of a large rectangle have been transformed into a wearable art form with the least possible cuts and stitches. Throughout this study, as a certain framework, it is aimed to be an instructive resource with the manipulation techniques described step by step in the sections of literature and practice that addresses how to reach wearable art forms.
