Abstract (EN)
The Ottoman Empire needed some innovations and regulations in the middle of the 19th century. The period in which these regulations were made is called the Tanzimat Era, and the edict in which these regulations were explained is called the Tanzimat Edict. Tanzimat led to great changes especially in the economic field during the Ottoman period. The basis of this change was experienced in the tax system. Between 1844 and 1845, the land, animals, real estate and some other incomes of the society, especially in the districts close to the center, were determined in the Ottoman Empire and the people were taxed according to this ability to pay. In the Tanzimat era the defters in which tax counts were kept were called the temettüat defters, and these defters constitute the main source of this study. The notebooks contain detailed information about the settlements to which they belong, both socially and economically. Therefore, the data in the defters allow many information to be revealed, from the names of people to nicknames, from the estimated population of villages and neighborhoods to the estimated population of the accident, from animal species and customs to their diversity. In this thesis, the social and economic structure of the Bolu Dörtdivan district was tried to be revealed based on the dividend records of 1844-1845. In addition to the Temettüat registers, various research and reference works about Dörtdivan and Bolu were also used. This study consists of four parts apart from the introduction and conclusion parts. In the introduction part of the study, the history of Dörtdivan is explained. In the first part, it is aimed to keep the financial records in the Ottoman Empire and to determine the place of the temettüat registers in these records. In the second part, the data regarding the social appearance of the district were evaluated by focusing on names, nicknames and professions. In the third chapter, agriculture and animal husbandry activities are emphasized. In the fourth chapter, it has been tried to mention the economic view of the district in terms of taxes. In the conclusion part, the administrative, economic and social situation of Dörtdivan district in the years 1844-1845 was evaluated.
