Abstract (EN)

This doctoral thesis study aims to examine the Big Farms, which are examples of agricultural enterprises in the Ottoman Empire, for the year 1844 in Thessaloniki. Because Thessaloniki was one of the earliest places where Big Farms of this type were seen in the territories under the Imperial administration. Temettuat registers are the main source of our study for Thessaloniki, one of the first places where large farm structures were seen in the Ottoman Empire. Because, like the Ottoman Tahrir registers, the Temettuat registers are one of the richest collections in the archives, which contain real statistical data to understand the administrative and financial structure of the Ottoman Empire. For this purpose, it was aimed to generate statistical data on 146 farms, which were identified in 8 sub-districts of Thessaloniki in 1844, by means of Thessaloniki Temettuat Registers. First of all, the managers, shareholders, the number of households and the number of jizye registers, the incomes and tax burdens of these 146 farms in 1844 were determined. It has been tried to determine the quantity and quality of the land assets of these farms. The unit prices of 13 products produced in the farms for the year 1844 were determined together with the production amount. In addition, the occupational distribution of the taxpayers in the households in the farms has also been tried to be presented statistically. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to the literature on the administrative and financial structure of the farms in Thessaloniki for the year 1844.
