Tamim al-Dari: A study of his biography and hadith transmissions

This study explores the life, scholarly profile, and hadith transmissions of the Companion Tamīm al-Dārī. The first chapter outlines his Arab origin, birth in Palestine, conversion to Islam in the ninth year of the Hijra, participation in the Prophet's military expeditions, and his notable contributions, such as illuminating the mosque, introducing public storytelling, and initiating the construction of the pulpit. The second chapter evaluates his scholarly standing and role in the transmission of hadith, identifying the Companions and Successors who narrated from him. The discussion also addresses the claim that his narration of the hadīth of al-Jassāsa links him to Isrā'īliyyāt, demonstrating that such assertions are not substantiated. Furthermore, the fact that the Prophet himself transmitted hadith from Tamīm is interpreted as an early precedent of the principle that "elders may narrate from juniors." The third chapter analyzes eleven of his narrations within the framework of the Kutub al-Tis'a: four are classified as sahīh (authentic), six as ḍaʿīf (weak), one as hasan (fair), and one as very weak. The study concludes that Tamīm al-Dārī occupies an important place in the Islamic scholarly tradition, both through his life and through the hadiths he transmitted.
