Investigation of the effect of toothpaste containing theobromine and arginine on the surface properties of different restorative materials

Abstract (EN)

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the roughness that can be created after the application of two theobromine and arginine-containing desensitizing toothpastes to the surface of microhybrid composite, nanohybrid composite and giomer restorations used in the restoration of teeth, with surface roughness device and SEM images. Material and Method: Blocks of 2mm height and 10mm width were formed from microhybrid (Arabesk, Voco, Germany), nanohybrid composite (Herculite, Kerr, USA) and giomer (Beautifil II, Shofu, Japan) restorative materials in specially prepared teflon molds. Before and after the blocks were simulated with theobromine, arginine-containing toothpaste and distilled water, which corresponds to a 1-year brushing cycle, the surface roughnesses formed on the surfaces were examined with the help of a profilometer and SEM device, and the obtained data were recorded. Results: While the lowest initial surface roughness was observed in the Arabesk group, the highest initial surface roughness was observed in the Giomer group. When the effect of the applied toothpastes on the surface roughness is compared; Theobromine toothpaste application did not cause a significant increase in the start-end values in the Herculite group (p=0.074). The application of arginine toothpaste and distilled water created a significant increase between the start-end values (p<0.05). In Arabesk and Giomer groups; There was a significant increase between the start-end values (p<0.05). When the finish surface roughness is compared, while the Arabesk group has the lowest surface roughness, the Giomer group has the highest surface roughness. Conclusion: Toothpastes containing theobromine and arginine can increase the surface roughness of microhybrid composite, nanohybrid composite and giomer restorations.
