Determination of genotoxic effects on peripheral blood lymphocytes of people living in the thermal reactor

Abstract (EN)

Thermal power plant work for the purpose of electricity generation. This study consisted of a donor group consist of 20 people living in the thermal power plant region and a control group consisting of 20 people not living in the thermal power plant region. Blood samples taken from 40 people in total were monitored for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Data about the age, smoking and alcohol habits, drug use, exposure to harmful gases from the thermal reactor were recorded. According to the results of the research, the replication index, mitotic index, and micronucleus rates of the individuals living in the thermal power plant region were found to be higher than the individuals who did not live in the thermal power plant region. This increase in rates is statistically significant (P < 0.01). According to the data obtained, the people live in the thermal power plant region should be informed and protective measures should be taken due to the heavy metals produced by the thermal power plant.
