The effect of flipped learning on students' academic success

Abstract (EN)
The study aims at investigating the effect of Flipped Learning on students' academic success in English lesson. Flipped Learning is an approach that inverts the time class teaching and homework is done. The sample of the study consists of 31 7th grade students in Pazarcık Middle School that is located in Malatya, Turkey. As a quantitative method, experimental design with pre and posttest with one group is going to be used in the study. During the experimental procedure, in the experiment group Flipped Learning is going to be applied. The experimental process is going to last for 5 weeks, 4 lessons for each group a week. The process will be applied during the 7th grade units: "Superstition" and "Public Buildings". Data gathering instrument is success test prepared by the researcher and student views questionnaire. The success test has 27 questions while questionnaire is composed of 30 questions. The success test developed by the researcher according to the objectives determined by Ministry of Turkish National Education was applied as pre and posttest. The questionnaire was applied at the end of the experimental process. Students' behviours are controlled with Class Dojo: a behavior management system. In this study, participation frequency, cumulative grade point average and student views about the method are also examined. The data gathered will be compared if there is a significant difference between the academic success and to examine the views of the students about the method after the implementation. Paired sampled t-test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test , Independent samples t-test, Mann Whitney U and ANCOVA tests are used to analyze the data. Results show that the method is effective in increasing academic success. Participation and cumulative grade point average are effective variables in increasing success.Students have positive views about the method. It can be said that the method can be used instead of existing methods to increase success. Key Words:Flipped Learning, English Language Teaching, Academic Success.
