Teratogenic effect of organomethallic fungucides on development testis

Dithiocarbamate propineb and maneb are organometal fungicides, which are widely used for the control of diseases in plants. Maneb is a dithiocarbomates fungicide that contains manganese. The dithiocarbomates are considered to be the chemicals of low toxicity Propineb is a fungicide with the propylene-bis-dithiocarbamate structure. It is widely used in fruit and vegetable horticulture. In this study;Female Wistar rats were exposed by gastric orally to 400 ppm propineb and 250 ppm maneb, from the one day of gestation up to birth. We found that the body weights of both one-day old litters and their fungicide-treated mothers were lower than those of controls. Propineb showed a variety of macroscopic (unilaterally, ptosis and paralysis) and microscopic symptoms in the organs of female rats. Sample preparation was made for light microscopy. After fixation of tissues by bouin fixative solution ,they are directly dehydrated in a graded serious of ethanol and embedded in parafine. Thin sections 4-6 micrometre were cut using a microtome and stained with H-E and H-Vangiesson then photographed under a light microscope Histological examination of the testis of one day-old litters shows some hemorhagia and dilatation in veins in the intertubular area, vacuolization and hypertropy in spermatic cells Degeneration in spermatic cells can be seen in a few seminiferous tubules. In this study, this testicular damage is thought to be the manganese or zinc effects of maneb and propineb. Key words: Maneb, Propineb, Testis, Rat
