This study's subject matter is portratiure, one of the most important genres of art in the history of art. The study is limited to an ontological approach. The image of the question "What are the artists who often produce self-portraits looking for as their own subject and object?" is an obvious trap. This study also includes the artistic lives of artists who treat existence as a threshold. Various questions such as "Is this threshold an image?", "What is an image?", "What does the image want to show us?", "What makes the artist's gaze unique?" constitute the starting point of this study. Throughout the study, an attempt has been made to clarify these questions. How can the artist enter into a relationship with an alien and fictitious reality that exists inside/outside with their gaze? With their gaze, the artist gives birth to the creation practices of the society and period in which they live in. In the modern world, the psychological characteristics of human beings in society, the concepts of existence, nothingness, emptiness and distance, and Sartre's aphorism, "Existence is a humanism", have been understood as the liberation movement of the individual, and society and artists have found expression through their own gaze. For example, Bacon's making invisible bathtubs visible, Freud's effort to prove existence, Giacometti's search for truth can be cited as examples. Their understanding of art can be seen as rebellion in terms of their period. Philosophy produces concepts, but the artist realizes their creation with the world of images. The task of both is to shed light on society. These developments, the changes in the social sphere after the twentieth century and the issue of alienation as a matter of identity in the image world of modern period, artists are discussed in the context of portrait painting with examples. Finally, in the history of philosophical thought, metaphysical approaches, impositions and cultural and social policies have created art that develops conditionally as an opposition to ontology. In the modern period, this interdisciplinarity has emerged with the examples of self, identity and alienation, through artists' portrait art. In portrait painting, artists have made portraits that show the traces of a unique point of view, showing the impressions of the person's inner world, different from the understanding of realistic portraits. As a result, the reality in the painting of the artist, who finds a way out of the question "Who am I?", which people have been searching for the answer to for ages, through portrait painting, is about the reality behind the visible.
