The in-between: Thinking togetherness without the common (Agamben, Levinas, Buber)

From ancient times to contemporary discussions, the concept of 'togetherness' is discussed within the frame of 'being together', 'being-with-other/s', on account of the 'community' that centered around subject of the 'I'. This thesis argues that thinking togetherness without the common that is the in-between, rather than 'being together'. Additionally, in this thesis it is claimed that thinking togetherness without the common as the in-between, is only constituted through Lyotard's concept of 'phrase' which gives us the ground of the possibility of a community without something common. Agamben's concept of 'whatever singularity', Buber's primary word 'I-Thou', and Levinas's concept of 'other' are discussed in terms of thinking togetherness without the common that is the in-between. This thesis aims to emphasize that there is an alternative way of understanding the question 'How do we live together?' in terms of togetherness without the common.
