TikTok'un İngilizce kelime hazinesini geliştirmek için eğitim aracı olarak etkinliğinin araştırılması

The purpose of this research is to assess the suitability of TikTok in raising the understanding and use of the English language among students. As most of the targeted audience of TikTok includes individuals of a younger age, it can be seen that TikTok offers the prospect of learning languages through fun videos. The study aims at particularly determining the perception of learners embracing TikTok for enhanced vocabulary use, evaluating the influence of students' demographic factors, including age and gender, on the perceptions that they hold, and also to establish the advantages and disadvantages of embracing TikTok in vocabulary learning. To fulfill these objectives, a mixed-method research design was adopted, using quantitative and qualitative data collection tools. The survey questions were adopted from the emergent literature and filled out by 160 ELLs at Salahaddin University in Iraq -Erbil city. The researcher also interviewed 20 survey respondents. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) analyzed the quantitative data. In contrast, the qualitative data was subjected to thematic analysis to increase understanding of the study on learners' experiences.The outcome highlighted several important findings. First, the learners' attitude towards using TikTok for learning vocabulary was mostly positive due to how information is presented and the wide range of videos. Secondly, gender was also found to have a non- significant effect on TikTok, meaning both male and female learners have similar attitudes towards TikTok. Thirdly, years of study were also found not to have influenced any significant change in the learners' attitude regarding the use of TikTok as a learning tool. Lastly, although using TikTok has been discovered to improve vocabulary acquisition due to its engaging features and the challenges that the users pose, content reliability and distraction are some of the enormous issues of TikTok. In conclusion, the study infers that TikTok could positively act as an instructional tool for improving vocabulary on condition that the challenges accompanying its use are countered and teachers select potential material well. The study brings new knowledge to the current body of knowledge regarding technology- assisted language learning for education stakeholders and the instructional design of TikTok in language learning contexts. Subsequent studies should look into the more lasting outcomes of using TikTok to improve learners' lexicon and examine the effects of TikTok on other skills in second language acquisition.
