Adaptation of tilburg pregnancy distress scale into Turkish: Reliability and validity test

Aim: The aim of this study is to test reliability and validity of Tilburg Pregnancy Distress Scale (TPDS).Methodology: It is a methodological study. Research sample consisted of 214 pregnant women who resorted to the obstetric out patient clinic between July and September 2012, were healthy and did not have any complications related to the pregnancy. Data were collected through socio-demographic information form and TPDS. This scale contains 2 main subscale and it is a four point likert type scale. In evaluation of the data paired simple t test, correlation, cronbach alpha, split-half analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used.Results: Internal consistency reliability coefficient of the TPDS is .70, negative affect subscale cronbach alpha value of .66, social (partner involment) subscale Cronbach alpha value of .71,while correlation coefficients between subscale item scores subdimension total scores vary between .20-.73. As a result of explanatory factor analysis Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient (KMO) .718,Barlett test result X2 = 571.98, p = 0.000. At the end of confirmatory factor analysis, model fit indexes were determined as ?2(102, N=214)=159.15, RMSEA=0.051, GFI=0.91, CFI=0.92 ve NNFI= 0.90.Conclusion and Recommendations: It was concluded that TPDS is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to determine distresses of pregnant women in Turkey. This is an important scale as it determines psycho-social problems experienced during pregnancy. It is recommended that this scale be used as a guide by midwives and obstetric nurses performing pregnancy follow-up in planning the care to be provided to pregnant women.
