The claymation animation technique as an artistic tool in Tim Burton films and its education

The aim of this thesis is to put forth the claymation animation techniques processes and work flow by studying the production of the Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas movie. Burton's filmography consists of sixty six different works, consist motion pictures, shorts, acting performances, artistic works, designs or animations, music videos, TV shows or films and advertisements. He has been nominated for min. twenty seven prizes, won the eleven among them. The 1993 produced American animation movie Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas won the seven of the twenty three nominations. It is the first animation, which has won the best visual effects Academy Prize / Oscar. Besides its main problem, this thesis also studied the sub problems, which are the animation, first invention and development; its definition and types; especially the claymation animation and Burton's artistic productions and stated that: Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas movie based on claymation, clay / plasticine formation technique is a giant project has taken for three years by hundreds of creators, workers and producers, which also are winners. This movie produced sixteen years ago has become a major work among its contemporaries. Studying the techniques such a movie used is important, valuable and illuminating. The production of the movie formed pre-production process, which are preparations and design, production and post-production processes, which are computer based visual effects and montage. First, the original story improved by writers and adapted to the cinema. Visualized by professionals, whole storyboard drew step by step, second by second and united. Crew produced stages, puppet and objects with extra features like moving or being over small. Animators characterized the puppets, recorded by camera crews and Selick directed the movie. Montages have been made; visual effects, audio and music have been added. After three years of detailed work the movie distributed, promoted and showed in the theatres. The importance and role of profession and education are undisputed. The education of animation could be an umbrella term only: Because countless disciplines worked together, this education can be defined as an education of a crew. Every member of the crew should get educated similarly but also differently. All production process has been made under the guidance of Burton as producer and the creator of the main story. It is also necessary to very well organize all the teams with their numbers and qualifications, missions and the coordination among them. This is the main cause of the animation education programs of the schools and the universities are so wide and deep. As a conclusion of these all the members of the crew educated accordingly and that it is the main goal of the programs organized.
