The evaluation of adiponectin and leptin levels in patients with Type 1 diabetes aged between 3-18 years

The aim of this research was to find the prognostic value of leptin and adiponectin levels in long-term follow-up and to determine the microvascular complications during early stages in Type-I DM patients.In this case-control study, a total of 81 children were included of whom 41 were Type-I DM patients and 40 were healthy subjects. There was no statistical difference in sociodemographic features between cases and controls. The data were collected via laboratory results and a questionnairre.The leptin and adiponectin levels did not differ between cases and controls. The leptin levels were found to be high in control group during pubertal period. The HbA1c levels showed significant positive correlation in patients with albumin levels higher than 200 micrograms in 24 hour urine samples.The leptin levels were significant in girls at both two groups, while adiponectin was not related to gender. There was a positive and significant correlation between body mass index and leptin levels in both two groups, it was negative with adiponectin. There was a positive and significant correlation between adiponectin and microalbuminuria.In conclusion, the monitoring of serum adiponectin levels may be important in early diagnosis of diabetic nephropaty which is a microvascular complication at Type-I DM patients who have bad metabolic control.Keywords: Type I-DM, leptin, adiponectin, microvascular complications, diabetic nephropathy
