The relationship between HBA1C and platelet indices and RDW level in type 2 Diabetes mellitus patients

In our study, we aimed to contribute to the literature by evaluating the relationship between HbA1c and platelet indices (PLT, PCT, MPV and PDW) and RDW in Type 2 diabetic patients. It was planned on patients who applied to outpatient clinics in Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Hospital between 01.04.2023-01.10.2023.The study group consisted of patients with Type 2 DM who met the exclusion criteria, who applied to our hospital on the specified dates and whose HbA1c, fasting blood glucose and hemogram parameters were studied on the same day. The control group consisted of people with no known chronic disease who applied to our hospital on the same date range and who met the exclusion criteria and whose HbA1c, fasting blood glucose and hemogram parameters were studied on the same day. In both the study group and the control group, no sample was selected, it was aimed to reach the entire population; in addition, other laboratory test results requested in the same period and demographic data such as age and gender were also evaluated within the scope of the study. A total of 3924 people, including 1243 Type 2 DM and 2681 control group, were included in our study. In the correlation analysis including all participants, no correlation was found between HbA1c and PLT and PCT, while a weak positive correlation was found between RDW, MPW and PDW. In addition, diabetic patients were divided into 2 groups according to HbA1c levels. The mean value of RDW was found to be higher in the groups with HbA1c levels ≤7% and >7% Type 2 diabetes compared to the control group. In addition, the mean values of MPW and PDW were higher in the type 2 diabetes group with HbA1c level >7% compared to both the control group and the type 2 diabetes group with HbA1c level ≤7%. As a result of our study, an increase in RDW, MPW and PDW values was observed with an increase in HbA1c levels. When we look at the guiding role of platelet indices and RDW in the evaluation of patients with diabetes, it is thought that more studies are needed. Because many preanalytical factors may affect these values.
