Evaluation of dietary inflammatory index, diabetes awareness, mood and nutritional status in individuals with type 2 diabetes

Abstract (EN)
Type 2 diabetes is a complex disease influenced by many factors including environmental, genetic and psychological. There is a bidirectional relationship between nutrition and inflammation. This study was planned to evaluate of evaluating the dietary inflammatory index, diabetes awareness, mood and nutritional status in individuals with type 2 diabetes. In the study 218 volunteers Type 2 diabetes patients 20-65 years participated. General information of participants, anthropometric measurements, biochemical findings, eating habits, diabetes awareness and acceptance levels ((Diabet Awareness and Acceptance Scale-DAAS), emotion regulation difficulties ((Emotion Regulation Difficulty Scale Short Form- 16- DERS-16), self-efficacy levels (Self-Efficacy Scale in Type 2 Diabetics- SE), daily energy expenditure (Physical Activity Record) and dietary inflammation levels ((Diet Inflammatory Index (DII)) ) were collected and analyzed. 39.9% of the individuals are male and 60.1% are female. The average age of the individuals is 54.55±8.99 years. 0.9% of the individuals are thin, 34.9% are slightly fat, 54.6% are obese. Women had higher awareness scores than men (p<0, 05). Women's DERS total scores are higher than men's (p<0.05). There was no significant deciency between the BMI values of the individuals and the scale scores (p>0.05). There was a positive and statistically significant correlation between the total score of the DAAS and the total score of the SE, and a negative and statistically significant correlation between the total score of the DERS (p<0.05). A negative and statistically significant correlation was found between the total score of DERS and the total score of SE (p<0.001). The mean value of the dietary inflammatory index scores was 2,73±4,46. There was no correlation between DII and DERS-16 and SE scores, but the awareness scores of individuals in Q1 (the most pro-inflammatory group) (p>0.05) were higher than those of individuals in Q4 (p<0.05). Many factors such as gender, age, nutritional status, diabetes awareness, emotional states and self-efficacy levels of individuals with type 2 diabetes affect glycemic control of individuals. Therefore, to promote better glycemic control, it is recommended that individuals with diabetes receive targeted education from healthcare professionals to enhance awareness, regulate mood, improve self-efficacy, and adopt anti-inflammatory dietary habits.
